Nail Care Dos

1. Do Maintain a Clean Diet for Optimal Nail Health

Your nails will suffer if your diet includes a lot of processed, packaged, manufactured, and junk/fast food. A healthy, clean diet is imperative for healthy nails. If you want your nails to grow optimally and develop a natural lustre, consume more fruit, vegetables, lean meats, leafy greens, salmon, whole grains, nuts, beans, grains, and legumes.

Nails are made of protein, so it goes without saying that lean poultry, fish, pork, and beef will work wonders for your nails. Fruit is high in antioxidants, which help protect cells against free radical damage. This damage increases inflammation and affects nail health.

Consume more blueberries (high in antioxidants) and strawberries (high in vitamin C). Vitamin C increases collagen production, which plays a big role in making nails more resilient. We also recommend takingq quality supplements for optimal nail health.

2. Do Keep Your Nails Clean, Dry, and Damage-Free

Keep your nails clean and dry as much as you can. This will help prevent lifting and stop bacterial growth from forming under the fingernails.

We also recommend reducing external damage as much as possible. If you’re partaking in an activity that can affect your nails (washing dishes, cutting/peeling vegetables, gardening, doing manual laundry, etc.), always wear gloves.

Protect your hands and nails every chance you get. This will go a long way in helping you enjoy healthy, clean, and shiny nails.

Pro tip: Hot water is not your friend. The same goes for aggressive soap! If you’re tackling a chore that brings your nails into contact with hot water, wear gloves or turn the heat down.

Avoid using aggressive soap. Instead, opt for gentle, chemical-free handwash. Ideally, it should be USDA organic, paraben-free, triclosan-free, phthalate-free, fragrance-free, and biodegradable.

3. Do Use Quality Nail Tools and Accessories

Always use quality clippers, buffers, and manicure scissors. If you use low-quality tools, your nail health will be affected. We also recommend sterilizing all nail tools before and after use. This will help prevent bacterial and microbial growth.

4. Do Look Out for Signs of Damage

Nail problems aren’t uncommon. Make sure you actively look out for the following signs of damage:

  • Changes in nail color (discoloration)
  • Abnormal thinning or thickening of the nails
  • Changes in nail shape (curling)
  • Spots on the nails
  • Bruising, bleeding, swelling, redness, or irritation around the nails

If anything looks odd, consult your dermatologist or doctor at the earliest.

Nail Care Don’ts

1. Don’t Use Acetone-Based Nail Polish Removers

When you’re left with patchy, chipping nail polish, there’s nothing you want to do more than grab a nail polish remover and go ham on your nails. It’s very tempting; we get it! However, fight the urge to frequently use polish remover, especially acetone-based remover.

Acetone is an extremely aggressive and powerful polish remover. It’s so harsh that it strips the nails and surrounding skin of their natural oils. If you have an inflammatory skin condition like psoriasis, eczema, or rosacea, the damage will be significantly worse. Your nails, cuticles, and the surrounding skin will feel dry, flaky, and irritated. In some cases, redness may also occur.

Switch to an acetone-free polish remover. Ideally, you shouldn’t remove polish too frequently, even if you’re using an acetone-free remover. Be intentional with your nail polish. Use a quality polish that lasts without chipping easily. We also recommend minimizing polish use and opting for gentle press-on nails instead.

2. Don’t Get Rough with Your Cuticles

Take care of your cuticles. Avoid cutting, biting, or picking at them. The cuticle serves as a natural barrier and prevents bacteria and fungus from damaging the nail bed. By cutting your cuticles, you’re inadvertently increasing the risk of infection. Instead, gently push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher.  Your nails will thank you for this little measure!

3. Don’t Use Low-Quality Press-On Nails

Press-on nails are a great alternative to acrylic nails and aggressive nail polish. However, make sure you steer clear of low-quality press-ons. Instead, opt for high-quality, handmade press-on nails that sit comfortably on your nails and don’t cause any damage during application and removal. The right press-ons will elevate your look while helping you enjoy optimal nail health.

4. Don’t Use Your Nails as Tools

This goes without saying, but many of us are still guilty of doing it. Avoid using your nails as tools to open wrappers, tear into sealed shopping bags, peel fruit, scratch cards, scrape food caked on a pan, and so on.

If you don’t have the right tools at your disposal, it may be tempting to let your nails do the work. However, avoid doing this at all costs. If you poke, scratch, pick at, and tear into items, you’ll cause immense damage to your nails and cuticles. Your nail shape will also be affected.
